Kabwe is the capital of the Zambian Central Province with a population estimated at 210,000. Formerly named Broken Hill, it was founded when the Broken Hill lead and zinc deposits were discovered in 1902. With the closure of the mining company (the sole employer of over 95% of the workforce) in 1984-86, many families have been left vulerable to chronic poverty fuled by HIV/AIDS. Women and children are desproportionately affected to woes of poverty.
WHAT WE DO
Savings Loan Association recognizes the vulerablility of women and children in society. To this end, SLA works with the community towards four strategic objectives:
Lameck, at 19 is now ready to go to college and persue is dream of joining the military in Zambia. Without the care and support by SLA, Lamecks dream would have ended. SLA gave a small loan to Lamecks guardian, Ms Kombe to begin selling ice sweetend and coloured water ("ice blocks" and profits were used to care and support Lameck's education. In December, this year, Lameck completes his secondary education!
There are number of ways you can make a difference in the lives of women and children in Zambia:
1) Sponsor a women micro enterprise grant of $1,000 to benefit 5 or more women to begin small innovative micro enterprise income projects to help improve livelihoods for their children

3) Support our Home Based Care Program with medical supplies to enable them effectively provide the care and support towards the chronically ill patients they visit-A home Based Care visit would cost $10 per week.
3) Help SLA (our organization) to build capacity so that we operate effectively and efficiently by sponsoring the recruitment of Fiancial staff person as full time (we are all volunteers) so that we manage our resources and solicit for other funding in an expeditious and robust manner.
